SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — San Francisco taxpayers could soon pay $190,000 in a lawsuit settlement with an undocumented immigrant who claimed he was reported to federal immigration authorities in violation of the city’s sanctuary city ordinance, the City Attorney’s office confirms to KPIX5.
The settlement is expected to be confirmed by San Francisco supervisors in future hearings.
Pedro Figueroa-Zarceno walked into the police station on December 2, 2015 to recover his stolen car.
When he left the station, he was immediately taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
A document from federal immigration authorities released by his attorneys indicates that a San Francisco police officer directly contacted ICE and told them where to find Figueroa-Zarceno, the man’s attorneys and representatives said Wednesday.
The apparent incident, which led to the two-month detention of Figueroa-Zarceno, could be a violation of Sanctuary City policies placing limits on local law enforcement’s ability to cooperate with immigration officials, according to his attorneys.
Figueroa-Zarceno, a native of El Salvador with a fiancee who is a U.S. citizen and an eight-year-old daughter, was released Wednesday.
Speaking through an interpreter, Figueroa-Zarceno said that once he was at the station he was detained and handcuffed, and told that police needed to ask him questions. No questions were asked, but after a few minutes he was released out a side door, where an ICE agent was waiting outside to detain him.
“I could hear my daughter screaming outside the van, Dad! Dad!” he said. “I could hear her telling them not to take her dad.”
The city approved a Sanctuary City policy in 1989 prohibiting city officials from enforcing immigration laws in most cases as a way to encourage immigrant communities to trust and cooperate with police.
A second 2013 ordinance, Due Process for All, prohibits San Francisco law enforcement from detaining people on behalf of immigration authorities for deportation unless they are wanted for a serious crime.
Figueroa-Zarceno’s attorneys said the ICE document released Friday indicates that the sheriff’s department contacted ICE on Dec. 2 stating that a “final order fugitive” had been contacted by San Francisco police.
At the same time, the document states, a San Francisco police officer contacted the ICE duty officer directly and told him Figueroa-Zarceno was at the police station. He was taken into custody by ICE around half an hour later.
ICE officials confirmed the detention but would not comment on the documents released Friday.
Zachary Nightingale, Figueroa-Zarceno’s attorney, said the document shows that while he served two days for a DUI in 2012, there were no criminal warrants for Figueroa-Zarceno in the system, only a civil deportation order dating back to 2005.
A judge has since reopened Figueroa-Zarceno’s immigration case after finding that the initial order was given without proper notification, and a new hearing is now scheduled for 2019, Nightingale said.
Eileen Hirst, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department, said a warrant for Figueroa-Zarceno was found in a national criminal database when police ran his name through the system, and the sheriff’s department called ICE to confirm that warrant, as is routinely done with all warrants.
The department did not provide his location to immigration authorities during that call, she said.
Police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said in a statement Friday that then-Police Chief Greg Suhr had informed Mayor Ed Lee that Figueroa-Zarceno “never should have been taken into custody by ICE agents after being released from Southern Police Station.”
“It is the policy of the San Francisco Police Department to foster trust and cooperation with all people of the City and to encourage them to communicate with SFPD officers without fear of inquiry regarding their immigration status,” the statement said.
The department is investigating and if any violations of policies and procedures are found, “there will be serious consequences,” the statement said.
John Coté, a spokesman for the Office of San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera said, “San Francisco has strong policies in place to encourage victims and witnesses to report crimes without fear of being deported, which include our sanctuary ordinance. These policies are designed to foster respect and trust between law enforcement and residents to ensure our communities are safe. The City, including the Police Department, remain committed to them.”
Coté said, “This proposed settlement is a fair resolution for all of the parties involved.”
Mayor Lee said he’d spoken with officials at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security about the case last week, and is “pleased” that Figueroa-Zarceno has been released.
Supervisor John Avalos said the incident was an illustration of how collaboration with immigration authorities can erode the trust between the community and local law enforcement.
It also highlighted the increased “politicization” of immigration during the election season, as seen in the national response last year to the fatal shooting of Kathryn Steinle in San Francisco, allegedly by an undocumented immigrant who had been released from custody a short time earlier.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and his wife, Jane Sanders have hired prominent defense attorneys amid an FBI investigation into a loan Jane Sanders obtained to expand Burlington College while she was its president, CBS News confirms.
Politico Magazine first reported the Sanders had hired lawyers to defend them in the probe. Sanders’ top adviser Jeff Weaver told CBS News the couple has sought legal protection over federal agents’ allegations from a January 2016 complaint accusing then-President of Burlington College, Ms. Sanders, of distorting donor levels in a 2010 loan application for $10 million from People’s United Bank to purchase 33 acres of land for the institution.
According to Politico, prosecutors might also be looking into allegations that Sen. Sanders’ office inappropriately urged the bank to approve the loan.
Burlington attorney and Sanders supporter Rich Cassidy has reportedly been hired to represent Sen. Sanders. And high-profile Washington defense attorney Larry Robbins, who counseled I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, is protecting Jane Sanders.
Ms. Sanders’ push for the liberal arts college’s costly land acquisition was cited in a press release by the college when it shut down in 2016.
Brady Toensing of Burlington, the man responsible for the claims filed to the U.S. attorney for Vermont, was a chairman for the Trump campaign in his state.
“I filed a request for an investigation in January 2016 and an investigation appears to have been started right away,” he said in an email to CBS News. “It was started under President Obama, his Attorney General, and his U.S. Attorney, all of whom are Democrats.”
“My only hope is for a fair, impartial, and thorough investigation,” Toensing added.
Weaver told CBS News that Toensing’s claim that Sen. Sanders used his influence to lobby for the loan is a “political charge” that is “baseless” and “false.”
And as for the claim that Ms. Sanders manipulated the loan application, Weaver said, “The loan was approved by the financial board at the college.”
Sen. Sanders, formerly mayor of Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, regards the claims as a political game levied against him after his run for president in the 2016 primary election, a platform which has transformed the small-state senator into an influential voice in American liberal politics.

At the University of Albany, three black students claimed that they were the victims of phsyical assault and racial slurs.
However, forensic evidence (twelve different security cameras – some with audio) proved that they had been lying. There was no hate crime. It was all fake. In addition, it turned out that all three of the black “victims” had themselves committed assault against whites.
When Hillary Clinton had thought this was a real hate crime by whites against blacks, she – justifiably so – criticized the people who had allegedly committed it, saying “There’s no excuse for racism and violence on a college campus.” But now that forensic evidence has proven that it was a fake hate crime, Clinton refuses to criticize the black people who carried out the hoax, despite the fact that these black people were filmed on video committing assault against whites.
Likewise, the hundreds of hypocrite social justice warriors who had – justifiably so – gotten mad and protested when they had thought it was a real hate crime, are now being silent now that it has been proven that it was a fake hate crime, again, despite the fact that the black hoaxers were filmed on video committing assault against white people.
And as far as the black people who committed this fake hate crime? They are getting zero time in jail, despite the fact that all three of them had committed assault against white people.
There is a huge double standard going on here.

Despite recent attempts to paint the United States as a major global polluter, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. is among the cleanest nations on the planet.
In the most recent WHO report on air pollution, the United States was listed as one of the countries with the cleanest air in the world, significantly cleaner in fact than the air in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, Japan, Austria and France.
While France and other G7 countries lamented the U.S. exit from the Paris climate accord, America’s air is already cleaner than that of any other country in the G7.
Following standard practice, the WHO measures air pollution by the mean annual concentration of fine suspended particles of less than 2.5 microns in diameter. These are the particles that cause diseases of all sorts and are responsible for most deaths by air pollution.
According to the WHO, exposure to particulate matter increases the risk of acute lower respiratory infection, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, stroke and lung cancer.
The report, which analyzed the “annual median concentration of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) for both urban population and rural and urban population” found that the United States was one of the most pollution-free nations in the world.
The annual mean concentrations of particulate matter in the air range from less than 10 to over 100 µg/m3, the report states. At the very low end of the spectrum, the United States has a concentration of just 8, while China has a concentration more than seven times higher at 59, India at 66, Egypt at 101 and Saudi Arabia with the worst air pollution at 127.
“The mean annual concentration of fine suspended particles of less than 2.5 microns in diameter is a common measure of air pollution,” the WHO states.
The WHO report is corroborated by a series of other such studies on air and water pollution.
In a recent list of the 25 cleanest cities in the world, the only country to boast three cities among the cleanest on the planet was the United States of America, with Chicago coming in second place, Honolulu coming in fourth, and Portland, OR, coming in sixteenth. Unsurprisingly, no cities from China, Russia or India made the list at all.
Similarly, another list of the 15 most polluted cities in the world featured three cities from China, three cities from Saudi Arabia, and a whopping seven cities from India. No U.S. city made the list.
A third list, ranking the ten cleanest and ten most polluted cities in the world, placed two U.S. cities on the list of cleanest cities on the planet. The list of the most polluted cities in the world was led by two cities from China followed by two more cities from India. Two Russian cities also made the list. Again, no U.S. cities were found here.
With such relatively clean air throughout America, how can even reputable news agencies like Reuters continue spreading the well-worn lie that the United States is one of the “biggest polluters” in the world?
Rather than follow the time-tested practice used by the World Health Organization, which measures levels of disease-causing pollutants that get into people’s lungs, some have played a shell game, swapping a new measure of “pollution” based solely on emissions of carbon dioxide.
The problem with this ploy is that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant and it is dishonest to say it is. CO2 is colorless, odorless and completely non-toxic. Plants depend on it to live and grow, and human beings draw some into their lungs with every breath they take to no ill effect whatsoever.
Growers regularly pump CO2 into greenhouses, raising levels to three times that of the natural environment, to produce stronger, greener, healthier plants.
Current levels of carbon dioxide concentration in the environment are substantially lower than they have been during earlier periods in the planet’s history. Without human intervention, the concentration of CO2 has climbed as high as 7,000 parts per million (ppm) in prior eras, whereas at present the concentration is just over 400 ppm.
Some experts, such as UN climate scientist Dr. Indur Goklany, have defended rising CO2 levels as a good thing for humanity. Goklany has argued that the rising level of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere “is currently net beneficial for both humanity and the biosphere generally.”
“The benefits are real, whereas the costs of warming are uncertain,” he said.
While the United States must remain vigilant to keep the level of real, dangerous pollutants to a minimum, it may take some consolation in the fact that among G7 nations, it has the cleanest air of all.
More than 50 Evergreen State College professors sign petition demanding “disciplinary investigation” against biology professor Bret Weinstein because he said the school should treat all races the same
I’ve already written about the nonsense going on at Evergreen State College here and here. And now I have some new information to tell you.
A petition which has been signed by more than 50 of the school’s professors states:
“Demonstrate accountability by pursuing a disciplinary investigation against Bret Weinstein according to guidelines in the Social Contract and Faculty Handbook. Weinstein has endangered faculty, staff, and students, making them targets of white supremacist backlash by promulgating misinformation in public emails, on national television, in news outlets, and on social media.”
Wow.
I was raised in a time when civil rights protestors were demanding (quite reasonably so) that people of all races be treated the same.
But today, apparently, such a desire to treat all races the same “endangers” people and makes them “targets of white supremacist backlash.”
Folks, if you’re considering sending your child to Evergreen State College, here’s a little advice: don’t do it. In addition to the fact that the professors will try to brainwash them into being idiots, there’s also the fact that having the school on their resume will likely act as a repellent to prospective employers.

At Cromwell High School in Connecticut, a male track runner has climbed all the way from last place to first place simply by claiming to be a girl.
In this particular case, the person in question has not even taken any gender altering hormones, and has not had sexual reassignment surgery. Instead, the person merely claimed to be a girl – and presto – they moved up all the way from last place to first place.
Radical left wing feminists have no right to complain that this is “unfair,” because it is they themselves who created this situation.
As time goes on, more and more “female” sports will come to be dominated by people who were born with a penis and have XY chromosomes, but who simply claim to be female. They won’t even have to take the hormones or have the surgery. They just have to say that they are female. Quite a racket that they have started for themselves.
By comparison, men’s sports will never have to worry about this. I guess the radical left wing feminists will probably end up referring to this as “male privilege,” even though it was the radical left wing feminists themselves who created this “unfair” situation in the first place.
Wikipedia violates its own policy by censoring reliably sourced information about the idiots at Evergreen State College
Official wikipedia policy states:

These policies jointly determine the type and quality of material that is acceptable in Wikipedia articles, and, because they work in harmony, they should not be interpreted in isolation from one another. This policy is non-negotiable, and the principles upon which it is based cannot be superseded by other policies or guidelines, nor by editor consensus.
In line with that policy, a crazy person who lives in my apartment building recently added the following specific, detailed information to wikipedia’s Evergreen State College article:
On June 1, 2017, the Washington Post, referring to events that had taken place earlier that year, wrote, “This year, the school suggested that white students and faculty stay away from campus that day. Weinstein, a biology professor, wrote a letter to organizers saying that he would not stay away from campus, noting, ‘On a college campus, one’s right to speak — or to be — must never be based on skin color.'”
On this same issue, New York Times staff editor Bari Weiss wrote an opinion column which said, “Following the protest, college police, ordered by Evergreen’s president to stand down, told Mr. Weinstein they couldn’t guarantee his safety on campus. In the end, Mr. Weinstein held his biology class in a public park.” Weiss also included a link to this YouTube video, and wrote of the video, “For expressing his view, Mr. Weinstein was confronted outside his classroom last week by a group of some 50 students insisting he was a racist. The video of that exchange — ‘You’re supporting white supremacy’ is one of the more milquetoast quotes — must be seen to be believed. It will make anyone who believes in the liberalizing promise of higher education quickly lose heart. When a calm Mr. Weinstein tries to explain that his only agenda is ‘the truth,’ the students chortle.”
Everything in those two paragraphs is cited by either the Washington Post or the New York Times, which are as reliable (by wikipedia standards of reliability) as any source that one could ever hope to find.
Unfortunately, going against official wikipedia policy, someone else removed that information, and replaced it with this vague, generic, watered down version that doesn’t really convey any specific details about what actually happened at the school:
The Day of Absence is an annual event held in April at Evergreen inspired by Douglas Turner Ward’s play. Each year, minority students are encouraged to attend off campus activities focused on issues involving race. This is followed by the Day of Presence, when the campus community reunites. In 2017 the process was reversed, with white students encouraged to attend off campus activities, while the events for minority students were held on the Evergreen campus. One faculty member, Bret Weinstein, publicly objected to the change. In May 2017, student protests – focused in part on the comments by Weinstein – disrupted the campus and called for a number of changes to the college. Following the protests, a threat conveyed to police led to the temporary evacuation and closure of the campus.
Afterward, something known as an “edit war” happened, with supporters of letting people know the truth reinstating various parts of what had been removed, and opponents of letting people know the truth removing what had been added back in.
As of this writing, none of those original, specific details are in the wikipedia article.
To make matters even worse, YouTube has since removed the video that was cited by the New York Times, with the following explanation:
“This video has been removed for violating YouTube’s policy on harassment and bullying.”
Pretty much any YouTube video of social justice warriors acting like idiots could be removed under that policy, because pretty much everything that social justice warriors do is “harassment and bullying” in one form or another.
But I think the real reason that YouTube removed the video was to protect the social justice warriors from being embarrassed by their own behavior. After the video had been originally put up at YouTube, the protestors had written a letter to the school which stated:
“We demand that the video created for Day of Absence and Day of Presence that was stolen by white supremacists and edited to expose and ridicule the students and staff be taken down by the administration by this Friday.”
I count at least four factual errors in that one sentence:
1) The video was not “stolen.”
2) The video was not “edited” by “white supremacists.”
3) It is the students themselves who “expose and ridicule the students” because they chose to conduct such behavior in a public setting.
4) The video was not put up by “the administration.”
By removing the video, the only people that YouTube is protecting are the people who committed the “harassment and bullying” that YouTube claims to be against. Sunshine is the best disinfectant. The best way to fight against “harassment and bullying” is to expose and embarrass the people who are engaging in it. If YouTube was truly against “harassment and bullying,” then instead of deleting the video, YouTube would link to the video on its home page so as many people as possible would see it.
In addition to demanding that the video be taken down, the protestors also demanded that “criminal charges” be filed against the people who “stole” the video.
Furthermore, after protestors demanded permission to skip doing their homework, the school’s president, a weakling and wimp named George Bridges, gave in to their demand. How hard could it have been for him have said, “You are adults. You chose to attend this school. And with that choice comes the responsibility to do your homework.”?
Evergreen State College has an admission rate of 98%. The school could probably save itself a lot of trouble by lowering that rate all the way down to 96%. And it should get a new president as well.

The Muslim attackers were screaming “This is for Allah,” but CNN doesn’t know their motives. For CNN and the rest of the establishment propaganda media, “This is for Allah” means “This has nothing to do with Islam.”

(CNN) Details were emerging in the early hours of the United Kingdom’s Sunday morning about what we now know are two “terrorist incidents” in central London….
At 10:08 p.m. Saturday night, London Metropolitan officers responded to reports of a vehicle colliding with pedestrians on London Bridge.
Witness Mark Roberts said he said saw a van speeding across London Bridge towards London Bridge underground station, which suddenly swerved, bounced off the pavement and hit several pedestrians. He said he heard what sounded like gunfire about five to 10 minutes later.
Another witness, Brad Myers, had just left London Bridge when he heard a “boom” behind him, which he thinks was the sound of a car hitting the guardrails or other vehicles. He said he saw someone jump into the water to avoid being hit.
Multiple ambulances were sent to the scene with the first team arriving within six minutes, according to the London Ambulance Service. An advanced trauma team was also sent by car.
As emergency services rushed to respond, reports came in of multiple stabbings at Borough Market, a popular gourmet food market with restaurants that were open and busy on a Saturday night.
Witness Elsbeth Smedley told CNN that a man ran into Elliot restaurant in Borough Market, and stabbed two people before running out.
As they responded to the two incidents, police were then called to a third potential attack — reports of an “incident” in nearby Vauxhall, a residential area, which occurred just before 1 a.m. (8p ET). Police confirmed it was not related.
At 00.25 a.m., police announced the two incidents at London Bridge and Borough Market were “terrorist incidents.” People were warned to avoid the area while emergency vehicles attended to the incidents which police described as “ongoing.”
British Prime Minister Theresa May calls the London Bridge incident a “potential act of terrorism.” On Sunday, she’ll chair a meeting of the government’s Cobra emergency committee.
What we don’t know
How many attackers there were, their motives and whether they were acting together are all questions being asked.
The proximity of the attacks and the timing seem to suggest they were coordinated, but police have not confirmed that….

When Lynda Carter’s Diana Prince transformed into Wonder Woman, the flash of light changed colors from red to white to blue
When I watched Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman on TV every week as a young child in the 1970s, our family’s TV was black and white, so I had no idea that when Diana Prince transformed into Wonder Woman, the flash of light changed colors from red to white to blue.
The show ran for three seasons. The first season took place during World War II, just like in the comic book. In the early episodes, there was no flash of light during the transformation. The flash of light was eventually added during the middle of season one in order to try to prevent viewers from noticing any inconsistencies in the background during the “before” and “after.”
In order to save money on expensive World War II set pieces, the show was moved to the then present 1970s at the beginning of season two. In order to keep Lyle Waggoner on the show, the Steve Trevor character of the 1940s was replaced with Steve Trevor Jr. in the 1970s, who knew everything about Wonder Woman from having listened to stories that had been told to him by his father.
Plot summaries can be read here. The show is available on DVD. My personal favorite season is three, where a huge number of the plots were campy science fiction stories.
