The Seattle City Council’s recently implemented minimum payment ordinance for app-based workers like those who work handling deliveries through apps such as DoorDash, Uber Eats and Instacart is hurting the workers it intended to help.
In 2022, the Seattle City Council enacted a first-of-its-kind ordinance that aimed to help ensure that app-based delivery drivers earn a minimum wage plus tips and compensation for expenses. That law took effect last month and effectively requires companies to pay the greater of a minimum per-minute amount of $0.44 and a minimum per-mile amount of $0.74, or a minimum per-offer amount of $5.
In practice, this has prompted companies like DoorDash and Instacart to pay their independent contractor delivery drivers $26 or more per hour to comply with the regulation and cover their costs. That amount is well above the city of Seattle’s regular minimum wage of $19.97 per hour and has forced those companies to pass some of those costs on to consumers placing orders.
Gary Lardizabal, who lives in Seattle and has made deliveries through Uber since 2016, told FOX Business that the delivery business has fallen off dramatically since the first week of the ordinance’s implementation as consumers balk at higher prices for orders.
“My experience in downtown Seattle, which is booming with Amazon and other tech workers, wait times are half the day,” Lardizabal said in an interview. “There’s reduced orders for drivers and couriers… and there’s definitely reduced business for restaurants.”
“All of them you can see there’s just less bags on the delivery trays, the racks. Chipotle used to just have bags upon bags — that’s gone down,” Lardizabal said. He said one restaurant told him they had averaged 170 orders per day through gig companies before the ordinance, and that last Thursday at 6 p.m. they only had 16 orders placed that day.

Puget Sound Energy asks customers to reduce usage as cold snap settles over Washington

Puget Sound Energy is asking its customers to voluntarily reduce their natural gas and electricity usage during the evenings.
“Due to the extreme cold temperatures facing our area, regional utilities are experiencing higher energy use than forecasted, and we need to reduce strain on the grid,” said a spokesperson.
Officials are also asking customers to limit their use of hot water.
“We appreciate your assistance in supporting our communities throughout the region,” continued the spokesperson.

Multiple suspects charged in connection to south Seattle home invasions targeting Asian families

SEATTLE — Multiple suspects linked to a series of robberies and home invasions targeting Asian families in south Seattle were charged by a King County judge Friday afternoon.
The suspects are facing a multitude of possible charges, including theft, burglary, robbery, attempted robbery, and unlawful possession of a firearm, but only certain charges were filed on Friday. The following suspects were charged Friday afternoon:
Javez Paul Tubbs, 30, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and is being held on $1.5 million bail.
Tyrhone Marr, 32, was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and is being held on $1.25 million bail.
Dalauno Habtai, 26, was charged with three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and is being held on $2 million bail.
Demarcus Pate, 28, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and is being held on $1.5 bail.
A 16-year-old male was charged with three counts of robbery, three counts of burglary, and a single theft charge. He is being held in Juvenile Detention while awaiting a judge’s ruling on whether he will be detained or released. KOMO News is not naming this suspect since he is a minor.
Jaqawn Jamison, 23, was charged with one count of burglary and is being held on $300,000 bail.
An additional suspect, who KOMO News is not naming at the moment because he has not officially been charged, is awaiting a filing decision in the near future.
The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (KCPAO) said these are preliminary charges, and they anticipate receiving further information that could potentially lead to further charges.
Police believe the men could be linked to as many as 14 incidents in four zip codes and say they were also found with a stash of cash, drugs, and guns.
Defense attorneys attempted to dispute some of the circumstantial evidence against the suspects in court, but ultimately, the court noted the seriousness of these crimes and concerns for public safety, ordering them all to continue to be held behind bars.
Court documents state investigators believe the victims were specifically targeted due to the suspects’ perceptions of the victims’ race or ancestry.
“State law is very clear about what we need to be able to prove a hate crime beyond a reasonable doubt,” Casey McNerthney, a spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, said. “The difficulty is we have to show the motivation at the time of charging, but when we have the evidence to do so, we make that charging decision.”
According to court records, the suspects stole more than $30,000 in cash, jewelry, and important documents, like passports and green cards.
Investigators used cell phone data, identifying six phone numbers that were at two or more of the locations during the time of the incidents, and cross-referenced those phone numbers with records from the Department of Corrections and community corrections officers, as well as records from pawn shops. Police say surveillance images also link the suspects to the crimes.
So far, police believe four men and one teen are responsible for the crimes. The adult suspects were each ordered to be held in jail on over a million dollars bail. The teen suspect was also ordered to remain in custody and questioned the judge in court about why he would not be allowed to be released on house arrest. The judge repeated the teen suspect would remain in custody and advised him to speak with his attorney.
State records also indicate most of the suspects have criminal histories, totaling over a dozen prior convictions for crimes including assault, burglary, robbery, and attempting to elude.

Target is taking action in response to retail theft.
On Tuesday the big box retailer announced plans to close nine stores, effective Oct. 21.
“We cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance,” the company said in a statement.
The stores set to close include one in Harlem, N.Y; two in Seattle, Wash.; three near San Francisco and Oakland, Calif.; and three in Portland, Ore. All “eligible” employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other Target locations, the company said.
Target added it “invested heavily in strategies to prevent and stop theft and organized retail crime in our stores” prior to closing stores, including by adding more security to stores, using third-party security guard services, and implementing “theft-deterrent” tools across the business.
Ultimately though, the only decision left was to close certain stores.
“Despite our efforts, unfortunately, we continue to face fundamental challenges to operating these stores safely and successfully,” the statement said.

In late June 2023, we received mail from readers who asked about a story involving Seattle Pride’s annual parade. The main question from our readers appeared to be if it was true that viral videos showed some naked men had participated both in and nearby the all-ages parade that had occurred on June 25, with families and children in attendance.
For example, one reader asked us, “Is this real?,” and included a link to an article from The Washington Times. The Times’ headline read, “Naked men on bikes expose ‘all ages’ Seattle Pride Parade to criticism.”
Two videos referenced by the Times provided confirmation that at least a dozen naked men, and possibly some nude women, too, had participated in the festivities in front of families and children, both during and nearby the Seattle Pride Parade, including riding bicycles along the parade route, as well as washing themselves off in the water at International Fountain. The parade has historically drawn as many as 300,000 onlookers, according to a report from 2018.
The first video showed around a dozen naked men who were riding bicycles and waving before moving along, all while following the Seattle Pride Parade route. Signs on the bikes included the words, “Challenge Body Shame,” “Build Self Esteem,” and “Pride for EVERY Body.” Families and children were visible in the video, too, as the reporting said. Also, at least one child was seen riding alongside the men.
Hours after the first video appeared online, a second video was posted by the same source on Twitter that showed naked men, and again possibly some women, too, who appeared to be washing themselves in International Fountain. Families and children were also visible in this video, as the Times’ reporting mentioned.
Pierce County Superior Court Judge Philip Thornton released a violent serial criminal, and asked him not to commit any more crimes. Anyone who’s not an idiot can guess what happened next.

Aaron Fulk is a 48-year-old violent serial criminal who lives in the Seattle metropolitan area.
Fulk was recently arrested for threatening a security guard who was working at a transit stop. Pierce County Superior Court Judge Philip Thornton released Fulk without bail, and asked him not to commit any more crimes.
Eight days later, Fulk used a metal pole to fatally beat a 66-year-old disabled many to death.
Settle’s city council had recently voted to defund the police.

SEATTLE – Seattle police officers arrested 35 people in a downtown organized retail theft operation.
Throughout Wednesday, police saw people stealing and walking out of a store on 2nd Avenue with tens of thousands of dollars worth of cutlery, kitchen sets, detergent and several bottles of liquor.
Police said officers stopped the suspected thieves and recovered the items.
They were given trespassing notices and banned them from returning to the store for a year.
Police released the suspects, but one man was booked into the King County jail on a Department of Corrections warrant.
The police department said it will continue to work with businesses in the downtown core area about organized theft and to make sure customers are safe during the holiday shopping season.

Black Lives Matter claims to want to “protect” black people from the “racist” police.
The Official website for Black Lives Matter calls for getting rid of the police. Their exact words are:
“We call for a national defunding of police.”
However, in Seattle, after a black man drove his car into two white, female protestors who were standing in the middle of the road, Black Lives Matter called the police.
Calling the police because a black man hurt two white women is completely and totally 100% hypocritical on the part of Black Lives Matter.
Especially considering the fact that the two white women had chosen to stand in the middle of the road.

Anyway, it’s true that the road had been supposedly closed to traffic, but this was not enough to stop the driver.
The protestors were standing in the middle of the road, and yet they acted shocked when some of them got hit by a car.

After the incident happened, but before one of the protestors died from her injuries, Capt. Ron Mead of the Washington State Patrol said:
“Whether they’re protesters, whether they’re homeless, whether they’re broken down motorists, the freeway is simply not a safe place for pedestrians and we’ve said that steadfast… My hope is the result of this tragedy, the protesters will reconsider their desire to be on the interstate because I cannot guarantee their safety, plain and simple.”
I agree with everything that Mead says, except that I do not share his optimism that left wing idiots will stop standing in the middle of the street. This is not the first time that left wing idiots who were standing in the middle of the street ended up getting hit by an automobile. Hypocrite Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan allowed left wing protestors to harass other people’s neighborhoods, but she had the police crack down on the protestors when they came to her own neighborhood.
During the time that Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan allowed left wing protestors to forcefully take over the neighborhood known as CHAZ (or CHOP), during the time period from June 2 to June 30, crime in that neighborhood increased by 525%, compared to the same time period during the previous year.
This includes two murders that happened in CHAZ during that time period this year, whereas the normal number of murders in that area during that time period is zero.
All the while that this was going on, Durkan did nothing to stop the left wing protestors who had forcefully taken over CHAZ.
But then the left wing protestors came to Mayor Durkan’s own neighborhood, and all of a sudden, Durkan decided to use the police to stop them.
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkanis an extreme hypocrite for doing this. She allowed them to harass other people’s neighborhoods, but she got upset when they came to her own neighborhood.

After characterizing the infamous CHOP area of downtown Seattle as a “summer of love,” Mayor Jenny Durkan was eventually forced to acknowledge that the failed communist experiment was responsible for a whopping 525 per cent spike in crime.
As we highlighted yesterday, following weeks of violence and chaos, CHOP was finally dismantled by Seattle police, but only after occupiers marched on Mayor Durkan’s 5,000 sqft., $7.6 million house.
For almost the entirety of June, the area was plagued with fights, bickering, robberies and rapes, with occupiers targeting both outsiders and each other.
It has now emerged that compared to the same period last year, from June 2 to June 30 there was a 525 per cent jump in crime.
This figure is even greater than the 300% number repeatedly cited by Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best.
Rather embarrassingly, after proclaiming a “summer of love” and telling President Trump, “Seattle is fine, don’t be so afraid of democracy,” Mayor Durkan was forced to acknowledge the numbers in her own emergency order.
The order states that there were, “22 additional incidents, in person-related crime in the area, to include two additional homicides, 6 additional robberies, and 16 additional aggravated assaults (to include 2 additional non-fatal shootings).”
So in other words, a commune that was built in the name of opposing violence and brutality led directly to a massive increase in violence and brutality.
So much for the tolerant left!

Seattle’s newly minted autonomous zone is reportedly causing problems for the people who lived in the area before the zone was created.
The Daily Caller’s Shelby Talcott spoke Friday with Fox News host Martha MacCallum about what was going on inside the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) and how the activity was impacting people who lived in the immediate area but were not a part of the protest.
Talcott explained that tensions have been high because not everyone agrees that Raz Simone, the man who has declared himself to be the “warlord,” should be the leader.
“A lot of these protesters do not agree with Raz becoming this warlord,” Talcott said. “We spoke to a few of them that were manning the entry points here in Seattle, and they say that his idea of what he wants CHAZ to become is not what the majority of the people inside want. So it is a little bit difficult, because they want no rules, but this is a society used to living by rules.”
Talcott also shared part of an interview with a local resident who was only willing to give only his first name — Brandon — because he feared reprisal.
“You can see for yourself, you can see that we don’t have the right to vote for stuff here anymore,” Brandon said. “You can see the demands when they say the that we want the pensions away from every police officer in Seattle. They took our rights away. That’s not okay. It’s not political. It’s just not okay.”
“That is stunning,” MacCallum responded. “That is a citizen in Seattle who obviously doesn’t feel safe enough to even have his face revealed to say that he just misses order in his community.”
Talcott added that Brandon had spoken out on the issue earlier and he was threatened because of his comments.
