Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says amazon’s salaries of $150,000 a year for 25,000 new jobs in New York City constitute “scraps” and are not “dignified.” Meanwhile, she only pays her own interns $15 an hour.

In November 2018, CNBC reported:

Amazon will pay HQ2 employees an average of $150,000

On February 16, 2019, explaining why she opposed amazon creating 25,000 new jobs in New York City, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said:

“We need to create dignified jobs in New York City”

and

“We do not have to settle for scraps in the greatest city in the world”

I wonder how high those amazon salaries would have to be in order for Ocasio-Cortez to think they were “dignified” and not “scraps.”

Meanwhile, in December 2018, NPR reported:

When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez takes office next month, representing New York’s 14th District, she will be a part of the “blue wave” of new Democrats in the House. But the 29-year-old may end up being a part of a different kind of wave, too: a bipartisan effort for members of Congress to pay the interns they employ.

“Time to walk the walk,” she tweeted on Tuesday. “Very few members of Congress actually pay their interns. We will be one of them.” And she pledged more than just a stipend: Her interns will make $15 an hour.

In other words, when it comes to paying wages that are “dignified” and not “scraps,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a hypocrite.

Considering that Washington interns weren’t paid before this year, $15 per hour is a hell of an improvement.

“Congress allocated about $14 million between the two chambers to pay interns in September as part of a larger spending bill. Until offices budget that money, however, interns still are in limbo.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat set to represent New York’s 14th district when the new session begins, made headlines when she vowed to pay her interns at least $15 an hour, above D.C.’s minimum hourly wage of $13.25 and more than double the federal minimum hourly wage of $7.25. Most members of Congress representing Delmarva declined to give an exact amount they would pay their interns moving forward.”

Now, about all those illegal immigrants Trump hired to work for peanuts at his golf resorts and hotels, that’s real news you keep skipping out on. I wonder why.

Since Amazon is locating another HQ in Northern VA, A.O.C.’s interns would fair far better leaving her measly $31,200/yr job offer and apply for work at the new VA Amazon offices. Then the representative would quickly realize how evil capitalism can really be.

    • EDell replied:

Do you know how boring it is to work at Amazon just moving packages around all day compared to mingling with people in power in the halls of power and having some input in that while learning the inner workings of government?

      • Junnah replied:

They’re not building a warehouse, it”s a second East Coast HQ for one of the most technologically advanced companies in the world. Nobody pays that kind of payroll for picking, stacking and shipping.

My daughter is interning with a law firm. She’s not paid at all, and that’s the norm.
