If the Democrats had any brains, they’d nominate Ro Khanna for President in 2024

Fox News just reported:

U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna, D-California, appeared to be the only Democrat who expressed concerns about the ramifications of Twitter’s decision to censor the Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020, according to his communications with the social media platform that were released Friday.

Twitter owner Elon Musk released bombshell revelations Friday evening about what led the tech giant to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story in the final weeks of the 2020 presidential election. Musk outsourced his findings to Substack journalist Matt Taibbi, who published a lengthy thread about what had transpired behind the scenes at Twitter.

“Khanna was the only Democratic official I could find in the files who expressed concern” about the move to censor the story, Taibbi tweeted Friday night.

Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna expressed concerns over Twitter’s censorship of Hunter Biden laptop story

Twitter faced backlash after it censored the New York Post’s reporting of Hunter Biden’s laptop during the 2020 presidential election

By Louis Casiano

December 2, 2022

According to Taibbi, Khanna emailed Vijaya Gadde, then a Twitter executive who was charged with overseeing the social media platform’s trust and safety, legal and public policy, to relay his concerns.

“Generating huge backlash on hill re speech,” Khanna wrote in the Oct. 14, 2020, email. “Happy to chat if you’re up for it.”

Gadde quickly replied, according to screenshots of the email posted by Taibbi. In her email, she went over Twitter’s policies.

In his reply, Khanna seemed more concerned with First Amendment issues concerning the Hunter Biden story reported by the New York Post.

“If there is a hack of classified information or other information that could expose a serious war crime and the NYT (New York Times) was to publish it, I think the NYT should have that right,” Khanna wrote. “A journalist should not be held accountable for the illegal actions of the source unless they actively aided the hack.”

“So to restrict the distribution of that material, especially regarding a Presidential candidate, seems not in keeping of the principles of NYT v. Sullivan,” he added, referring to the landmark 1964 U.S. Supreme Court case that limits the ability of public officials to sue for defamation.

Twitter famously blocked its users from sharing the Post’s reporting of Hunter Biden’s laptop in tweets and in direct messages when the story was published in 2020 during a heated election between President Biden and then-President Trump.

At the time, Twitter Safety alleged that the articles were in violation of its “hacked materials policy.” Twitter’s then-CEO Jack Dorsey admitted his company’s actions were a mistake. Many critics have argued the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story by Big Tech and the media at large was enough to sway the election in favor of his father.

“I say this as a total Biden partisan and convinced he didn’t do anything wrong,” Khanna wrote. “But the story has become more about censorship than relatively innocuous emails and it’s becoming a bigger deal than it would have been.”

He added that “in the heat of a Presidential campaign, restricting dissemination of newspaper articles (even if the NY Post is far right) seems like it will invite more backlash that it will do good,” he said.

He then asked that Gadde keep the communication private between themselves and Dorsey.

“I believe our Constitution and First Amendment are sacred. As the congressman who represents Silicon Valley, I felt Twitter’s actions were a violation of First Amendment principles so I raised those concerns. Our democracy can only thrive if we are open to a marketplace of ideas and engaging with people with whom we disagree,” Khanna wrote in a statement to Fox News.

In a letter from Carl Szabo, of the research firm NetChoice, to Lauren Culbertson, Twitter’s then-head of public policy, Szabo said his firm met with nine Republican and three Democratic House staffers to gather intelligence about Facebook and Twitter and the Biden story.

Some figures on Capitol Hill referred to the laptop story as “tech’s Access Hollywood moment,” appearing to refer to the television entertainment show in which Trump was heard on an audio recording making degrading remarks about women.

In his letter, Szabo said Democrats complained that the social media companies let Republicans “muddy the water and made Biden look corrupt despite him being innocent.” They were also in agreement that social media needs to moderate for harmful content more often.

“When pushed on how the government might insist on that, consistent with the First Amendment, they demurred: the First Amendment isn’t absolute,'” the letter said.

Twitter declares access to its platform a ‘human right’ amid censorship of conservatives

The Nigerian government banned Twitter after it deleted a tweet from President Buhari

By Michael Ruiz

June 5, 2021

Twitter declared a free and open Internet to be “an essential human right in modern society” Saturday morning after the Nigerian government banned access to the social media giant following a dispute with its president – even as critics say it suppresses conservative content and bans its own users.

Twitter deleted a fiery tweet from President Muhammadu Buhari that many perceived as a veiled threat against violent separatists in the nation’s southeast – then his government’s information wing responded by banning the social media platform from the country.

https://twitter.com/Policy/status/1401151115022979076

“The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria,” the country’s Federal Ministry of Information and Culture tweeted Friday night.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, also announced that the government would begin licensing social media platforms and “OTT,” or over-the-top, operations, which offer content directly to viewers via the internet.

“We are deeply concerned by the blocking of Twitter in Nigeria,” Twitter’s Public Policy division tweeted in response. “Access to the free and #OpenInternet is an essential human right in modern society. We will work to restore access for all those in Nigeria who rely on Twitter to communicate and connect with the world. #KeepitOn.”

The declaration immediately drew responses from Twitter users who noted that the social media giant’s own policies allow for suspending and banning users – including former President Donald Trump.

https://twitter.com/Liz_Wheeler/status/1401191886405111825

“Access to the free & #OpenInternet is an essential human right in modern society… unless you’re Donald Trump. Or reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop. Or discussing the biology of gender. Or the murderous dictator of Iran. Or a Chinese Communist Party peon lying about COVID,” conservative author Liz Wheeler wrote in response to Twitter’s tweet.

Another user tweeted the meme of a comic book hero sweating over which button to choose – “Access to Twitter is a human right,” or “Ban these accounts for saying things I don’t like.”

Several other users weighed in with similar sentiments.

https://twitter.com/Policy/status/1401151115022979076

https://twitter.com/TheLaurenChen/status/1401246827396186114

https://twitter.com/HeartlandWX/status/1401210532951212037

The company has also been accused by Republican lawmakers of “shadow-banning” conservatives, or using an algorithm that suppresses the visibility of their tweets.

Twitter also restricted the New York Post’s account over a story about Hunter Biden just days before the 2020 presidential election, then backtracked after the story checked out.

And yet FOX Business reported last month that a network of pro-Iran Twitter accounts got numerous anti-Semitic hashtags trending as violence between Israel and Hamas broke out at its highest levels since 2014.

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Buhari’s deleted tweet came in response to arson attacks on government offices and police stations and appeared to threaten ethnic Igbo militants believed to be behind them.

“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of taccess-to-its-platform-a-human-right-amid-censorshhe destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War,” he wrote in the now-deleted tweet. “Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

The Nigerian president was a military officer in the fight against Igbo separatists who wanted to establish an independent Biafra nation in the country’s bloody civil war. More than 1 million people died in the conflict between 1967 and 1970.

Twitter rules prohibit tweets promoting or threatening violence.

Twitter suspended someone’s account because they tweeted a link to a peer reviewed, Stanford study on face masks at nih.gov

This is the study:

Trump’s deleted tweet from January 6, 2020: “I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!”

Gab has a new Trump account, and it includes all of his tweets from his permanently deleted Twitter account.

Before Twitter totally and permanently deleted Trump’s entire Twitter account, it had deleted this particular individual tweet of his, with Twitter claiming that this particular individual tweet “incited violence.”

Do you want to know what Twitter didn’t delete?

Twitter didn’t delete tweets that called for “KillTrump”

Twitter didn’t delete tweets that called for “assassinatetrump”

You can see lots and lots of those tweets at these two links. And some of them have been up there for a very, very long time.

https://twitter.com/hashtag/assassinatetrump?hashtag_click

Twitter allows those tweets.

But Twitter banned the above tweet from Trump, under Twitter’s bogus claim that it “incites violence.”

Dershowitz: ‘Not Fair’ Big Tech Companies Can Censor Users and Have Immunity

Dershowitz: ‘Not Fair’ Big Tech Companies Can Censor Users and Have Immunity

By Trent Baker

December 13, 2020

During Sunday’s broadcast of New York WABC 770 AM radio’s “The Cats Roundtable,” Harvard Law School professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz took aim at big tech companies like Twitter and Facebook for censoring users on their platforms.

Dershowitz said the social media giants are acting as platforms while also acting as publishers, which he said is “not fair” because they have both censorship and immunity.

“Facebook says we don’t like this, and Twitter says we don’t like attacks on Hunter Biden. And once you act as a publisher, you’re a publisher. You know what it means — I mean, you are a publisher. And you can be sued because you’re a publisher,” Dershowitz told host John Catsimatidis. “But they are platforms. They can’t be platforms at the same time and act like publishers. They should have to check a box: If you’re going to be a platform, no censorship. If you’re not going to be a platform, then you don’t get immunity. But you can’t both have censorship and get immunity at the same time. That’s just not fair and not right.”

He added, “I think we’re going to see a revision of [Section] 230. We’re also seeing anti-trust cases now against Facebook and others. Look, this is the hardest question under the First Amendment in the 21st-century — is how to deal with these giant social media that have such an enormous impact, are not regulated … on the other hand, we can’t just let them be immune from the law. They are not above the law either.”

Facebook and Twitter have banned this link to a New York Post article which explains how Hunter Biden made $50,000 per month in an industry that he knows nothing about

If you ever wondered how Hunter Biden managed to get paid $50,000 per month for being on the board of an industry that he knew nothing about, this New York Post article explains it.

Facebook and Twitter have banned anyone from posting this link.

Smoking-gun email reveals how Hunter Biden introduced Ukrainian businessman to VP dad

By Emma-Jo Morris and Gabrielle Fonrouge

October 14, 2020

Hunter Biden introduced his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, to a top executive at a Ukrainian energy firm less than a year before the elder Biden pressured government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor who was investigating the company, according to emails obtained by The Post.

The never-before-revealed meeting is mentioned in a message of appreciation that Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser to the board of Burisma, allegedly sent Hunter Biden on April 17, 2015, about a year after Hunter joined the Burisma board at a reported salary of up to $50,000 a month.

“Dear Hunter, thank you for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent [sic] some time together. It’s realty [sic] an honor and pleasure,” the email reads.

An earlier email from May 2014 also shows Pozharskyi, reportedly Burisma’s No. 3 exec, asking Hunter for “advice on how you could use your influence” on the company’s behalf.

The blockbuster correspondence — which flies in the face of Joe Biden’s claim that he’s “never spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings” — is contained in a massive trove of data recovered from a laptop computer.

The computer was dropped off at a repair shop in Biden’s home state of Delaware in April 2019, according to the store’s owner.

Other material extracted from the computer includes a raunchy, 12-minute video that appears to show Hunter, who’s admitted struggling with addiction problems, smoking crack while engaged in a sex act with an unidentified woman, as well as numerous other sexually explicit images.

The customer who brought in the water-damaged MacBook Pro for repair never paid for the service or retrieved it or a hard drive on which its contents were stored, according to the shop owner, who said he tried repeatedly to contact the client.

The shop owner couldn’t positively identify the customer as Hunter Biden, but said the laptop bore a sticker from the Beau Biden Foundation, named after Hunter’s late brother and former Delaware attorney general.

Photos of a Delaware federal subpoena given to The Post show that both the computer and hard drive were seized by the FBI in December, after the shop’s owner says he alerted the feds to their existence.

But before turning over the gear, the shop owner says, he made a copy of the hard drive and later gave it to former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello.

Steve Bannon, former adviser to President Trump, told The Post about the existence of the hard drive in late September and Giuliani provided The Post with a copy of it on Sunday.

Less than eight months after Pozharskyi thanked Hunter Biden for the introduction to his dad, the then-vice president admittedly pressured Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk into getting rid of Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin by threatening to withhold a $1 billion US loan guarantee during a December 2015 trip to Kiev.

“I looked at them and said: I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money,” Biden infamously bragged to the Council on Foreign Relations in 2018.

“Well, son of a bitch. He got fired.”

Shokin has said that at the time of his firing, in March 2016, he’d made “specific plans” to investigate Burisma that “included interrogations and other crime-investigation procedures into all members of the executive board, including Hunter Biden.”

Joe Biden has insisted that the US wanted Shokin removed over corruption concerns, which were shared by the European Union.

Meanwhile, an email dated May 12, 2014 — shortly after Hunter Biden joined the Burisma board — shows Pozharskyi attempting to get him to use his political leverage to help the company.

The message had the subject line “urgent issue” and was also sent to Hunter Biden’s business partner, Devon Archer, who also sat on the Burisma board at the time.

Pozharskyi said that “the representatives of new authorities in power tend to quite aggressively approach N. Z. unofficially with the aim to obtain cash from him.”

N.Z. isn’t identified in the email but appears to be a reference to Burisma founder Mykola Zlochevsky, whose first name is a Ukrainian version of “Nicholas.”

When the alleged shakedown failed, “they proceeded with concrete actions” in the form of “one or more pretrial proceedings,” Pozharskyi wrote.

“We urgently need your advice on how you could use your influence to convey a message / signal, etc .to stop what we consider to be politically motivated actions,” he added.

Hunter Biden responded by saying he was with Archer in Doha, Qatar, and asked for more information about “the formal (if any) accusations being made against Burisma.”

“Who is ultimately behind these attacks on the company? Who in the current interim government could put an end to such attacks?” he added.

The exchange came the same day that Burisma announced it had expanded its board of directors by adding Hunter Biden, who was put in charge of its “legal unit and will provide support for the Company among international organizations,” according to a news release that’s since been scrubbed from Burisma’s website.

Hunter Biden actually joined the board in April 2014, according to multiple reports.

His lawyer said last year that Hunter was “not a member of the management team,” adding, “At no time was Hunter in charge of the company’s legal affairs.”

About four months after Hunter Biden’s correspondence with Pozharskyi, Archer forwarded Hunter Biden an email chain with the subject line “tax raise impact on Burisma production,” which included Pozharskyi saying that the Ukrainian cabinet had submitted new tax legislation to the country’s parliament.

“If enacted, this law would kill the entire private gas production sector in the bud,” Pozharskyi wrote.

In the Sept. 24, 2014, email, Pozharskyi also said he was “going to share this information with the US embassy here in Kyiv, as well as the office of Mr Amos Hochstein in the States.”

At the time, Hochstein was the State Department’s newly appointed special envoy and coordinator for international energy affairs.

In December 2017, the Naftogaz Group, Ukraine’s state-owned energy company, announced that Hochstein had joined the company as an independent director, but on Monday he announced his resignation.

“The company has been forced to spend endless amounts of time combating political pressure and efforts by oligarchs to enrich themselves through questionable transactions,” Hochstein wrote in an op-ed published by the Kyiv Post.

In addition to denying that’s he’s spoken to Hunter Biden about his overseas business dealings, Joe Biden has repeatedly denied any conflict of interest or wrongdoing by either of them involving Burisma.

Last February, he got testy during an appearance on NBC’s “Today” show when co-host Savannah Guthrie questioned whether it was “wrong for [Hunter] to take that position, knowing that it was really because that company wanted access to you.”

“Well, that’s not true. You’re saying things you do not know what you’re talking about,” the elder Biden responded.

Last December, Joe Biden also lashed out during a Democratic primary town hall event in Iowa, where a man accused him of sending Hunter to Ukraine “to get a job and work for a gas company, he had no experience with gas or nothing, in order to get access to . . . the president.”

“You’re a damn liar, man. That’s not true and no one has ever said that,” Biden fumed.

Biden then continued berating the man as he stepped forward, called the man “fat” and challenged him to “do push-ups together, man.”

The FBI referred questions about its seizure of the laptop and hard drive to the Delaware US Attorney’s Office, where a spokesperson said, “My office can neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation.”

Hunter Biden’s lawyer refused to comment on the specifics but instead attacked Giuliani.

“He has been pushing widely discredited conspiracy theories about the Biden family, openly relying on actors tied to Russian intelligence,” the lawyer, George R. Mesires, said of Giuliani.

Pozharskyi and the Joe Biden campaign did not return requests for comment. Hochstein could not be reached.

The Maduro diet: How most Venezuelans lost an average of 43 pounds in two years

By Daniel Alman (aka Dan from Squirrel Hill)

July 15, 2020

In May 2017, the Washington Post reported:

In a recent survey of 6,500 Venezuelan families by the country’s leading universities, three-quarters of adults said they lost weight in 2016 — an average of 19 pounds… a level of hunger almost unheard-of outside war zones or areas ravaged by hurricane, drought or plague.

In February 2018, Reuters reported:

Venezuelans reported losing on average 11 kilograms (24 lbs) in body weight last year… according to a new university study…

That’s 43 pounds in two years.

Before I explain how this came to happen, I want to start out by explaining what did not cause this to happen.

Former ESPN NBA reporter Chris Palmer praised protesters for burning down 189 units of affordable housing. But later, when protestors came to his own neighborhood, he got really scared.

By Daniel Alman (aka Dan from Squirrel Hill)

May 31, 2020

Chris Palmer is a former ESPN NBA reporter.

He praised protesters for burning down 189 units of affordable housing.

But later, when protestors came to his own neighborhood, he got really scared.

Here’s a screenshot of his hypocritical tweets. You can see a bigger version of the image at this link: https://i.redd.it/szbv1kn485251.jpg

In the first tweet, Palmer shows a photograph of 189 units of affordable housing that was burned down by protestors. Palmer praised the protestors with the following words:

“Burn that shit down. Burn it all down.”

However, very soon afterwards, Palmer made two tweets where he complained about protestors coming to his own neighborhood.

In the first of those two tweets, he said:

“They just attacked our sister community down the street. It’s a gated community and they tried to climb the gates. They had to beat them back. Then destroyed a Starbucks and are now in front of my building. Get these animals TF out of my neighborhood. Go back to where you live.”

In the second of those two tweets, he said:

“Welp. They’re gone. Security called the cops and they swarmed. Some scattered, others were arrested. (You hate to see it.) Tense moments. There’s graffiti everywhere. We live in a beautiful, safe community and have pride. These people had no pride and weren’t protestors.”

Palmer’s hypocrisy is some of the worst that I have ever seen.

Trying to figure out the real reason Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez bans reporters from her town hall events

The New York Times reports that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has banned the media from two of her town hall meetings.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted the following explanation for the ban:

“Our community is 50% immigrant. Folks are victims of DV, trafficking, + have personal medical issues.”

“This town hall was designed for residents to feel safe discussing sensitive issues in a threatening political time.”

“We indicated previously that it would be closed to press.”

Ben Jacobs, a reporter for The Guardian, responded with the following tweet:

“And how does the presence of reporters make people feel unsafe?”

I think Jacob’s question is an excellent one.

I’d also like to point out that all of the other Congressional districts also have constituents who are “victims of domestic violence” and who have “personal medical issues,” but that the Congressional representatives and candidates of those other districts haven’t banned the media from their town hall events.

In the video below, YouTuber Styxhexenhammer666 says that one possible reason for Ocasio-Cortez’s media ban is that any illegal aliens in attendance would – justifiably – worry about being filmed by the media. However, he then goes on to say that Ocasio-Cortez could ask the media to keep their cameras focused on her and not the audience, and that they would likely comply.

Styxhexenhammer666 then goes on to say that he thinks her real reason for banning the media is that there might be a constituent in attendance who asks her a tough question about economics that she can’t answer. Specifically, he says that she doesn’t seem to understand that the only reason that democratic socialism in countries like Norway works is because there is a strong, healthy private sector to pay the taxes to fund it. Take away that strong, healthy private sector, and your country ends up like Venezuela.

I agree with him on both of these points.

U.K. man arrested for making a tweet that some poeple say is offensive

My concern here is not about whether or not the tweet is offensive, as that is a matter of opinion.

My concern is that he was arrested even though the tweet did not contain any threats of violence. The fact that someone could be arrested for this non-violent tweet is absolutely horrible.

The Guy Behind the Viral ‘Mealy Mouthed’ Tweet Has Been Arrested in London

The allegedly anti-Muslim tweet spawned a wave of parodies

March 25, 2016

A British man who posted an allegedly anti-Muslim message on Twitter following Tuesday’s terror attacks in Brussels has been arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred.

Matthew Doyle was apprehended by police on Wednesday in the south London suburb of Croydon, the BBC reported. He subsequently “expressed concerns for his health” and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to authorities.

Doyle’s tweet, which has since been deleted, read: “I confronted a Muslim woman yesterday in Croydon. I asked her to explain Brussels. She said ‘Nothing to do with me’. A mealy mouthed reply.”

Tuesday’s attacks, which targeted Brussels Airport and a major subway station, claimed at least 31 lives and injured more than 100 others.

The tweet went viral and prompted several parodies on a variety of topics, ranging from Bono to muesli.

I confronted an Irish women yesterday in Camden. I asked her to explain Bono. She said “Nothing to do with me”. A mealy mouthed reply.

I confronted a dog today & asked him about that time when I was 4 and a dog bit me. “woof” he said. A mealy mouthed reply.

Doyle’s account, meanwhile, continued to tweet apparently racist messages and even retweeted a lot of the parodies insulting him.

Who cares if I insulted some towelhead ?? Really.

Holy Fuck ! The Towel head in my local kebab shop speaks no English? Has no NI number and was on his mobile to Syria #help

The 46-year-old public relations executive told the Telegraph on Wednesday that Twitter’s 140-character limit made the encounter sound far more confrontational than it was. He also said his controversial tweets were meant as a joke.

“That’s absolutely not who I am,” he said. “I’m not some far-right merchant, I’m not a mouthpiece for any kind of racism or radicalism.”

However, he did add that he feels Muslims are not being vocal enough in denouncing terrorism.

“The horror that happened in Brussels could happen here,” he added, “and you’re naive if you think London isn’t on some terror shortlist.”

Venezuelan military tells supermarket customers not to take pictures of empty shelves

The Venezuelan military has troops stationed in supermarkets, and they are telling customers not to take pictures of empty shelves. But that hasn’t stopped people from doing it. During the first week of 2015, the Twitter hashtag #AnaquelesVaciosEnVenezuela (“Empty shelves in Venezuela”) listed more than 200,000 tweets.
