Roger Ebert reviewed seven movies this weekend, but not “2016: Obama’s America”
Note: At the end of this posting I have added updates, which are in bold, including Roger Ebert’s responses to me from his blog.
This is Roger Ebert’s website. For the weekend of Friday, August 24, 2012, he has written reviews of seven new movies:
All seven of those reviews are actually dated Wednesday, August 22, 2012.
As I sit here writing this, it is Friday evening, August 24, 2012, and his website does not have a review for 2016: Obama’s America.
I suppose it’s possible that the movie was not available early for critics in Chicago to see. If that’s the case, then his review should be up tomorrow, August 25, 2012. (Update: It is now Saturday afternoon, August 25, and he has still not reviewed the movie. )
Over at one of Roger Ebert’s blog entries, I asked him:
Roger, when will I get to have the privilege of reading your review of the new film “2016: Obama’s America”?
He answered:
At such time as it opens theatrically here.
I responded with the following. Since I just submitted it, it has not yet been approved by Ebert:
So you’re saying that the movie which is number one all over the country is not playing in any theaters in one of biggest cities in the country? I can’t recall that ever happening before.
Actually, it’s playing at FOURTEEN different Chicago theaters:

FIRST BOX OFFICE: Anti-Obama Movie #1
By NIKKI FINKE
August 24, 2012
FRIDAY 2 PM: The anti-Obama movie 2016 Obama’s America went into wider release around America today and is opening right now in first place at the domestic box office. That’s quite a feat since the Rocky Mountain Pictures political documentary is still playing in only 1,090 North American theaters – or about 1/3 as many theaters as big-budget actioner The Expendables 2 (3,355 theaters).
Like I said above, I suppose it’s possible that the movie was not available early for critics in Chicago to see. If that’s the case, then his review should be up tomorrow.
Update: Roger Ebert has responded to my blog posting at his blog with the following:
Thanks for the info. Those are in outlying suburbs or cities. The distributors offered no screenings or screeners and did not announce the opening. A 40-mile round trip isn’t that easy for me. If they want to spend a couple of bucks to mail me a screener, that would be nice.
OK. So there really are no theaters in Chicago that are playing the movie. That’s a big surprise for such a major city, but it is certainly a legitimate explanation on Roger’s part.
On September 3, 2012, I posted the following at Ebert’s blog:
Roger, “2016: Obama’s America” is now playing at a theater which (according to mapquest) is less than one mile from the Chicago-Sun Times. When will we be able to read your review?
AMC Loews 600 North Michigan 9
600 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL
10:25am 12:50 3:10 5:30 7:55 10:20pm
Ebert responded:
Didn’t know that. They must have just opened it. I’m going to the Toronto film festival, and in preparation have had 15 screenings in the last seven days. Why are you so obsessed with this?
I answered:
I don’t know why I’m so obsessed with this, or with any of the many other things that I’m so obsessed with. That’s just how God (or nature, of whatever you want to call it) made me.
But I do know that the stats on my blog show that a lot of people have gotten to my blog when they searched for your review of the film. I may be the only one who is obsessed, but I’m not the only one who is curious.
Then someone named “rob”said:
He’s ‘obsessed’ with this because he clearly thinks you are avoiding reviewing the movie because of bias. The constant political talking points in your reviews and blogs can be…irritating to some.
and since you are probably the most famous movie critic, he’s basically calling you out. Which is fair enough. the movie, with no publiclity, has made more money than most of Michael Moore’s movies (all but 911) and yet, his movies are rarely ignored by critics
Someone named “Mike Doran aka Lowbrow Crank” said:
Why not just admit it, right up front: You’re not going to see Dinesh D’Souza’s anti-Obama movie because you don’t want to.
If Roger doesn’t want to see the movie, that’s perfectly fine with me. But that’s most definitely not the answer that he gave me when I first asked him about it.

I’m not familiar with Chicago and environs. Are Skokie, Wood ridge, Scaumberg, etc all considered Chicago neighborhoods or are they suburbs?
Anyway, I know this film will never be shown in my area. Nothing political, it’s just that the mallplexes only show kiddie and teen fare. I’d have to go to Manhattan or Philly to see it in a theater.
Do you know if the movie will be released on DVD or on streaming video anytime soon, because I’d really like to see it?

Are you one of the filmmakers or something? Calling this tiny movie “the #1 movie in America” and demanding that the nation’s top film critic review it for you seems more than a little promotional.

No – I had nothing to do with making this film.
It was the #1 movie when I made my blog post, which was on Friday – and I did include a link ( http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/first-box-office-anti-obama-movie-1/ ) to prove it. At the time, the link said:

By Saturday, the movie had fallen from first place.
As to why I want to know Ebert’s opinion of it, please see this blog post that I made a while ago:
Open letter to Roger Ebert: Please read this and explain how you can still support President Obama

I know he was in better health then, but still,,and he did the same to all those other left winged anti Iraq War or anti Bush movies! Im sure hes seen this, but will be on his last dying breath before he gives out ANY review, much less a positive one!

Why should Roger Ebert go out of his way to help publicize this right wing political advertisement? Especially as it’s so clearly more fantasy than fact. Chicago critic Richard Roeper has weighed in, check out his review. And yes, Gracie, those towns are suburbs and it is very difficult for Mr Ebert to get around.

Do you know precisely how many feature length films are released every year? It’s almost 600! That’s not even counting short films. Just because he didn’t get time to review 2016 doesn’t mean he’s the left wing nut job you all think he is. Besides, he even took time to comment on Sarah Palin’s The Undefeated movie (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20110727/REVIEWS/110729980/0/rss).

Yes, I know that, -that’s why hes such a hypocrite! He can get them sent to him, which I’m sure Dinesh offered, AND there’s about a thousand theatres near Roger in Chicago! Face it, Ebert DOES’NT want to see it, and WON’T see it if he can try not to. And regardless, he’ll NEVER review it, or give it any time, because hes shown to us, esp since the Iraq War, how much of a friggin lib he is!

Bro, you’re taking this way too personally. Ebert doesn’t even review every mainstream release that comes out, not to mention all of the smaller indie films that only ever seem to come out in NYC/LA You don’t know that he doesn’t want to see it, it just fits into your opinion of what you think liberals are all about. In any case, given zero star reviews before so it’s not like he’s mortified by films that dont live up to his standards. He even wrote about Palin’s The Undefeated. Besides, do republicans really need Ebert to justify they’re own views on Obama, as if he’s the final word on all films ever created? He’s just on reviewer (a damn good one at that) doing what he loves.

Except your point has no factual basis. You don’t know what Dinesh has done in terms of sending screeners out. In fact, Ebert responded to Dan from this very blog when Dan contacted him about seeing the movie (see comments section: http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2012/08/lets_have_a_meeting.html). Ebert stated that no screener of that film was ever sent to him and that if they were willing to, he’d watch it!
And again, Ebert has a disability that prevents him from visiting theaters and watching the same amount of films as he used to in previous years. I’m sorry but you really have no leg to stand on in this argument.

Are you serious, that’s why he’s not watching the Obama film?? Maybe he has cut back on the B+ movies but please spare me from that utterly lame excuse.
He has no trouble with his condition to head to the airport & fly to L.A or Toronto or to the Sundance Festival or NYC or …. !
Anybody who has travelled knows those trips are far more exhausting than a 40 minute drive to the suburbs to see a film – especially one that demands his attention because it is more controversial than all of Mike Moore’s films combined.
Besides … who knows if he’s telling the truth whether a screener was sent to him or not.

Is Roger Ebert a hypocrite? You tell me -
“Critic Roger Ebert is receiving an award from Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute for >>his support of independent cinema<<.
Sundance leaders said Thursday that Ebert will receive their Vanguard Leadership Award at a benefit for the institute June 5 in Los Angeles.
Redford says Ebert was one of the institute's first supporters when Sundance was founded in 1980 to support independent film."
http://www.sacbee.com/2012/09/20/4838759/sundance-to-honor-film-critic.html
He certainly had no problem reviewing Michael Moore's films. By him not reviewing the film he is saying it has no value & is trying to dismiss any questions raised about Obama.
Prior to being elected president, it would have been completely impossible for Obama to get a job starting at a senior management level position, let alone COE at any Fortune 1000 company because he has NO experience. Just the thought of that happening would be laughable by any business leader or economics professor from any university yet, he got elected president & leader of America – the world's #1 economy. That makes no sense whatsoever.

Hmmmm….. I want to think Mr. Ebert has more class than to make excuses for not reviewing 2016.
It seems that a left-wing-endorsed movie in limited release (Escape Fire) was reviewed by Mr. Ebert on the day it came out, and it is playing in the very theater that 2016 played in when he couldn’t seem to review it, couldn’t find it, didn’t have time, didn’t feel the need to run his busy schedule past you.

I will always credit Roger Ebert for teaching me how to appreciate film rather than merely ingest blockbusters. I’m a more thoughtful, adventurous movie-goer and film lover due to my 30 years under his wonderful influence. In 2012, however, it’s not about movies its about politics. Shame
